Sharing the Bliss
Question for an artist and a yogi
Doron,
I have had a few moments lately of being immersed in the immense beauty of a moment, like watching rain drops make patterns of circles in a temporarily flooded asphalt parking-lot pond when I "should" be rushing to an appointment, and I have this question for you.
How do you make such raw and beautiful contact with these moments in life, without feeling the pain of not being able to hold onto them? Without feeling the frustration of not being able to communicate, to transfer these moments to someone else, through art or words? I know this is an element of Vairagya (practice), but somehow that doesn't help much. I know there is guidance in yoga philosophy on how to live these beautiful moments with an open hand, not grasping, without a sense of loss, but I'm at a loss for how to apply this knowing in these lived moments.
Thoughts, tips, coaching?
Dear Danielle,
I reach for my cup of tea, lift it slowly and sip. Nice flavor of lemon ginger and honey, another sip; yummy health all around. The cup is empty. Thank you tea.
I travel mostly on my own so I don’t have someone to look at a wonder with, or share the experience of an amazing sunset. I have learned that the moment we speak of the wonder, the wonder is gone. It is no longer the experience but a story of the experience (which might be a wonderful experience of its own).
My camera used to be my best friend, as it was as close as possible to bring the experience of what I saw to others. But in reality, it showed nothing of my experience. Just a fraction of what I saw, not experienced. I have been taking much less photos these days, or I take photos that are beyond the eye, beyond the documentation of seeing.
When the experience is lived fully as a complete moment, it will be followed by many other amazing moments. Eventually, life becomes so full of these moments that there is nothing to lose, nothing to hold on to, just bathe in the presence of constant beauty.
A friend asked me “how can you do fashion photography with all these amazing models. Don’t you just want to have them all?” In NY, even walking down the street is difficult, as it is filled with human beauty. As I notice the beauty, I immerse in that flood of joy, and as the moment passes, I fill my heart with gratitude. How lucky am I to be able to experience this, to see life in this way. The experience has just grown even better.
There sure was a moment in the spiritual path, where life seemed lonelier than before. Most of the sweetest moments of seeing reality, as it truly is, the experience of bliss, are moments that cannot be spoken of. It is the knowing that others can experience this too, a deep connection with the common energy, that allows the sweet understanding that the experience is shared with others, just not through labels. From the moment of connection energetically by experiencing presence, to the simple fact that you might share a joy, a smile or a good vibe with the person you meet after being in such an experience.
As for sharing, when with someone, many times the most powerful sunset, or view or experience, will be when both are immersed in the experience, then there not even need to speak of it.
A Zen master used to take a walk every morning just before sunrise. He always went on his own. One day a student asked if he may join the master the next morning. The Master replied yes, under the condition that the student will remain silent the whole time. As they walked in the dark, as the dawn appeared, the student was silent. Then just as they reached over the hill, a huge rising sun appeared, and the student could not retrain himself “Look master, it’s amazing!” The master turned around and started walking back home.
May life be abundant with these moments, so that we can rest assure that another sweet moment will always show.
