Setting intentions – short term goals

Setting intentions is the process of reaching your goal. If for example my goal is to realize enlightenment, I can’t just close my eyes and have it. Well, technically I could, but for most of us it doesn’t work that way. So I need to take little steps, steps that I can actually achieve in a limited time frame. Maybe for today my intention is to eat a healthier lunch, and for this week, it is to meditate 10 min every day. These are tasks that I know I could do.

Maybe I would like to skip them, have excuses why today is not good, or why I don’t have time, but setting an intention is like signing a contract. It’s a commitment. So set intentions that you know you will actually do. You can set grandiose intentions that may seem romantically beautiful but it’s more important to be realistic and set intentions that are somewhat challenging yet still within your reach. This is not to say, find excuses of what not do, but rather enjoy setting intentions that do take you further, that do encourage you to practice and improve, while looking at a range of a relatively short time, a daily intention, a weekly intention, and maybe a three to four months intention. You can always extend your intention over and over again.

Every morning as you wake up, have a ritual of setting your daily intention and connecting with your weekly intention. Maybe the weekly intention is set every Sunday night, or Friday morning, whatever works for you, just be consistent. Decide on a time of day for your intention, say in the morning after washing up and before breakfast. Sit down, look at your watch and give yourself five minutes. Maybe set a timer, so you know you have the full five minutes just to sit and reflect, if you know what it is in a moment, spend the rest of the five minutes visualizing yourself in that state.
